How to Throw a Mario Party: Easy Amazon Finds & Decoration Ideas

For my son’s sixth birthday, there was only one theme he cared about and that was Mario (specifically the Boo character). Instead of stressing over DIY everything, we booked an indoor playground, ordered a handful of fun Mario themed decorations and let the kids run wild in their own little Mushroom Kingdom. If you want a party that feels thoughtful but still easy to pull together, here are simple decor, favor and food ideas you can mostly buy online and bring straight to your venue.

Mario Decor

Mario gift boxes: Bright Mario gift boxes that looked just like the question blocks and doubled as both decor and favor containers. I set them out along the food table and around the party room so it felt like the kids had stepped into the game world.

Mario Kart road tablecloths: To give everything a Mario Kart vibe, I used checkered “road” tablecloths on the main tables. They instantly made the party room look like a racetrack and tied in perfectly with the action packed indoor playground setting. They also had iridescent ones that looked like rainbow road if you’d rather add some color!

Mushroom and power up plates: We also used Mario mushroom and coin themed plates which tied the food table into the rest of the decor and made even snack time feel on theme.

Racing napkins: Instead of Mario napkins, we picked checkered racing napkins since they were more affordable and still matched the Mario Kart vibe on the tables. They do however have Mario themed napkins as well.

Foam power up stars: Soft yellow foam stars were a total hit. They worked as table decor and party favors.

Mario action figures: One of my favorite easy touches was ordering a set of Mario action figures. We used them as decorations during the party and afterward they became a special gift for the birthday kid.

Mushroom and star balloons: We added simple mushroom and star balloons for extra “power up” magic. It was budget friendly, quick to set up and made the space feel more themed without a lot of effort.

Boo Themed Cake: The star of the dessert table was a custom cake featuring Boo. If your child has a favorite Mario character, consider centering the cake design around them. A local bakery can often recreate a simple character design or you can use themed cake toppers if you want something more budget friendly. Either way, one standout cake can carry the whole theme and make your child feel extra special.

Boo T shirt: The birthday kid wore a Boo themed T shirt which was such an easy way to highlight his favorite character and tie the theme into photos.

Easy Party Favors

Boo or Mario keychains: We have a 3D printer so we made Boo themed keychains for each guest and tucked them into the party boxes. If you don’t have a printer, you can usually find similar Mario or Boo keychains on Etsy and they make a fun keepsake.

Mario fruit snacks: To keep things simple and kid approved, I added Mario themed fruit snacks to each favor box. They fit the theme and don’t require any extra prep.

Mario stickers or tattoos: There are a ton of Mario themed tattoos or stickers to throw in which are super affordable and the kids loved them.

Power up stars and small toys: The foam stars and a few small Mario style trinkets rounded out the favor boxes so each child left with a little collection of goodies.

Indoor Playground Party Tips

Hosting at an indoor playground takes the pressure off planning a lot of structured activities. The equipment itself is the entertainment so you can focus on the details that make the party feel special.

Choose an early time: We booked the first party slot around 9:30 a.m. The space was quieter, the kids were full of energy and it didn’t eat up the entire day for families.

Keep food simple: To go with the early time, we brought mini donut holes and juice boxes and coffee for the grown ups. It felt special but didn’t require cooking or complicated setup.

Let the theme live in the details: Because the playground handled the “fun,” our decorations, cake and favors did the rest. A few easy themed items including tablecloths, balloons, boxes and characters were enough to transform the space without overwhelming it.

You don’t need elaborate DIY projects to throw a memorable Mario party. With a few thoughtful purchases, some themed treats and a fun venue, you can create a celebration that feels magical for kids and manageable for you. Whether your child loves Mario, Boo or the thrill of Mario Kart races, these ideas make it easy to bring their favorite game to life for one very special level up birthday.
